Is there really such a thing as too many grocery stores? Ask the busy Fort Worth home owner and the answer is likely no. As such, many people are eagerly awaiting the opening of a WinCo Foods Store in South Fort Worth. The Boise-based grocery store is expanding into Texas, and this marks the chain’s first Texas location. According to Michael Read, vice president of public and legal affairs for the employee-owned company, Fort Worth is one of several planned locations for the grocery store chain in the DFW Metroplex.
Records show the company recently purchased 12.5 acres just west of Interstate 35W at the southwest corner of Sycamore School and Crowley roads. The company is said to be on the hunt for other possible sites, although no further information has been released regarding future locations. Adds Read, “Our real focus and our primary goal is to be the low-price supermarket in every area we operate in.”
For Fort Worth home owners, the new store will mean approximately 94,000 square feet of shopping space. Construction is set to begin this summer, and the new store will employ about 200 full-time and part-time workers. When asked about their expansion into Texas, Read said, “Our market research tells us good things are ahead if we open there.” WinCo currently operates 86 stores in seven states, including Arizona, Washington, Idaho, Nevada, California, Oregon and Utah.
Customers appreciate the 24-hour convenience of WinCo stores, not to mention the bevy of checkout lanes and the full-service atmosphere that includes a bulk foods section with more than 700 items, a deli, bakery, and fresh meat and seafood departments.
