In a move to rival Apple’s iPad, Microsoft will open temporary “pop-up” stores around the country on October 26th, including one in Frisco. That’s when Frisco home owners will have their first chance to purchase the Surface tablet.
In all but just a few cases, Microsoft is positioning their pop-up stores in malls or shopping centers that house an Apple retail store too. Twenty nine of the 32 stores will jockey for position with technology lovers as retailers turn the corner towards the holiday shopping season. These temporary retail outlets that will be scattered about the U.S. and Canada will only be open during the holiday season. Microsoft does have 24 brick-and mortar stores.
The technology giant is being especially tight-lipped about the pop-up stores in general. It’s unclear if they will push the Surface tablet exclusively, or offer some of the same services the brick-and-mortar stores offer, like the “Answer Desk,” their version of Apple’s “Genius Bar.” Each of the 32 pop-up stores’ pages on their website do highlight the Windows RT-based device, however.
Perhaps the biggest question of all though is the price, which again, Microsoft has yet to reveal. CEO Steve Ballmer has hinted at numbers between $300 and $800, and has said they will unveil the price before the October 26 ship date, which is also the day the pop-ups open. Microsoft has set a New York City launch event for October 25, and many expect the price to be revealed at that time.
The Frisco pop-up store will be located at Stonebriar Centre Mall.
